DiverseCity onBoard

Governance is the top tier of leadership, where ultimate oversight, strategic direction and policy are determined. Leaders are a powerful symbol for who belongs and who doesn’t. When individuals see someone who looks like them occupying a position of influence, they are more likely to aspire to it, to imagine themselves in that role, feel like they belong, are connected, and are valued.

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is one of the most diverse regions in Canada, with visible minorities and under-represented immigrant communities comprising an increasing percentage of our population. Agencies, boards and commissions and voluntary organizations deliver a wide range of essential services and programs to its residents. Yet there is a disconnect between the leadership of these organizations and institutions and the population of the region. DiverseCity onBoard directly addresses this challenge with a deliberate strategy to effect change by:

  • Connecting qualified candidates from visible minority and under-represented immigrant communities to the governance bodies of agencies, boards and commissions and voluntary organizations in the GTA; and
  • Working with public institutions and voluntary organizations to promote board recruitment and appointment processes that reflect the GTA’s diverse population.
