The changing face of municipal leadership: new mayors draw attention

Dec 10, 2010 |

Two newly-elected mayors attracted attention across North America this fall.  In Oakland, California, Jean Quan became the first Asian-American female mayor in the US.  And in Canada, Naheed Nenshi, business professor and community leader of South Asian heritage, became Canada’s first mayor who is also Muslim. After his win, Mr. Nenshi celebrated, saying,

“My greatest hope is that this morning … kids from across the city – northeast to southwest, every ethnicity, every income level, every neighbourhood, every single one of those kids – say, ‘what a country we live in, what a city we live in, because I can be anything.’” - Naheed Nenshi, quoted in the Globe and Mail (October 20, 2010)
