Leadership recognizes that everyone has a voice; everyone has something to offer

David Meyers, Birchmount Bluffs

Unlike the traditional, authoritarian leaders he grew up knowing, David wanted to work collaboratively and support other people in their life journeys.

“Our approach here is that leadership should be shared here, should be collaborative, participatory – so everybody has a voice, everybody has something to offer.”

“You want to build a society inclusive of people with disabilities and inclusive of people of colour and immigrants. It looks good on paper, but you still have to really beat down some doors and still have to get that message out.  It’s still a struggle.”

David Meyers is Program Manager at the Birchmount Bluffs Neighbourhood Centre. Birchmount Bluffs Neighbourhood Centre (BBNC) is a multi-service, charitable organization that offers wellness, social and learning programs to a diverse population, including infants, children, youth, adults and seniors. The centre has a history of advancing access and social inclusion for community members with physical or intellectual disabilities, acquired brain injuries or illness-related conditions. BBNC advocates with diverse stakeholders for disability rights, and for the right of persons with lived experience to share in the leadership of initiatives that affect them.
